So, you've made a web site, or you got your designer/nephew to make one for you. Now you need to get that web site on the Internet so that people can view the site and send email to you from any computer anywhere in the world. This is what a web hosting company will do for you. Let's break it down into what a web hosting company does and what a web hosting company does NOT: A web hosting company DOES: - offer you space on a server that they own in order to have your web site accessible 24 hours a day to as many different Internet visitors at one time as possible - offer you a means in which to access your web site via your chosen domain name (e.g. www.YourWebSite.com) - offer you a means in which to receive email addressed to you @ your web site domain name. - offer you a reasonable amount of web space that will comfortably store your web site and email - offer you clear instructions on how to access that web space so you can upload, edit and delete your web site files - offer you technical support to help with uploading files, email address and making sure your site works
A web hosting does NOT: - provide a way for your to access the Internet - design your web site (unless specifically stated) - know why your satellite tv no longer works or comes in fuzzy
If you are new to choosing a web hosting company for your site, the best advice would be to choose a plan that is within your budget and does not require you to commit for an unnecessarily long time. There are many month-to-month web hosting plans available online, look for those that do NOT require any sort of set-up fee, as hosting account set-up is largely automated now. A web site is an absolute necessity today.
